Comments by David Derr on his Assemblages
_
ALLEGORY
An old doll made into a cherub painted in a roccoco style and bound by chains to a block of wood.
All very much symbolic of boundries we put on our love. Whey do we love in duets when we could love in symphonies.
BOURDON 16
I like the way this looks kind of like Napoleon. The name comes from the organ stop that is at the bottom
DART FISH
I wanted to create a walking fish. I was going for a playful, toy like look. I'm going for a nitch that includes the folk art, antique and modern arts markets. All the components were found in dumpsters or in second hand stores, a few were purchased online including the taxidermists eye and the custom made darts.
KEN'S SECOND WORST NIGHTMARE
OK so I was in a second hand store and there was a box full of 20 naked Barbies, Skippers, etc. Had to get them. Found a Ken doll later along with a box that is their carrying case. Posed the female dolls in suggestive lesbian positions with Ken just hanging out by himself. Poor Ken, all undressed and unable to perform. Too bad he's not anatomically correct. I will leave it up to you to decide what his first worst nightmare is.
REFLECTIONS ON VIAGRA (after 6 hours)
I wanted to make a "mans" mirror, so what's would be more appropriate than to have the theme to do with one of mans most intimate pleasures. In this case I added the twist to the old "morning glory" theme. This poor guy took viagra a while ago and has had an erection for 6 hours...uh oh. The gauge in burned out and he will be soon if he doesn't get some help.
RUSTED VIOLIN
In 2009 I was asked by the New Jersey Symphony to create a "painted" violin for their yearly fundraiser.
This was my original idea inspired by Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" in particular "The Gates Of Kiev". This one was not submitted due to a weight and packaging restriction so I kept it for myself.n 2009 I was asked by the New Jersey Symphony to create a "painted" violin for their yearly fundraiser.

THE HEART IS THE EYE OF THE SOUL
If you reach out with your heart you can touch the soul of another. sometimes this is called compassion, sometimes love. But be careful, its dangerous out there. This assemblage is made of the following items. Two wooden elephants I found on ebay, two sets of deer antlers to replace the tusks, an old croquet ball, a component from a digital movie projector, a plexiglass ball, porcelain roses that I rusted, A wooden batik stamp form, a sand and acrylic molded finial, etc etc, it is more than the sum of its parts.
THE RIDDLE MOTHER
Created as an object of veneration. The Riddle Mother answers all questions by asking more.
SENTINEL OF DREAMS
This Assemblage is made from restored antique victorian scrollwork, a federal era keystone, parts from an old clock, a stone inscribed with the world "dream" and salvaged granite. Mostly rare and unique items
SENTINEL OF MYSTERIES
One of the "Sentinel" series. I wanted to create an assemblage that had the look and feel of an object that was sacred and to be venerated. The one of glass eyes is behind a magnifying glass which symbolizing the searching of spiritual mysteries. The finial at the top is enlightenment... or not.
SENTINEL OF THE BRIDGE

SENTINEL OF THE NIGHT
This Assemblage is made from restored antique victorian scrollwork, a croquet ball, an federal era keystone, a pyritized ammonite and salvaged granite. Mostly rare and unique items. On the back is written a poem/story I wrote of the same name:
I watch with cowled eyes the velvet darkness,,
listening to the night.
In the distance a lone bird cries,
breaking the silence.
Clouds move slowly across the face of the moon
and like a lover removing a diaphanous gown
reveals her glowing skin.
The wind sweeps across the plain
caressing the grass with its soft sound,
and the shafts bend and sway
opening to embrace the gentle pressure of its breath
All is quiet now
yet i see the beginning of the coming attack
it’s fiery portent glowing below the horizon.
Soon the endless battle will begin again
the heat will scorch the evening solitude
and drive the shadows into the ground
The meek have retired,
silencing their bodies lights
till the battle is over.
It is time to sound the alarm,
the tide is turning against us once again
We hide our shadows in the sand
we hide our still small voice in the shadows
We hide and are silent...
Until the dusk comes again to our rescue
and evening triumphs
so we can live free again
SENTINEL OF THE SUN
This Assemblage is made from restored antique victorian scrollwork, a croquet ball, an federal era keystone, a tibetan Bhudi bead, a golden chain, an antique plumb bob, the spring from and old clock and salvaged granite. Mostly rare and unique items.

WITHOUT A NET
Welcome to the circus. This is a balancing act made up of found objects. Inside the copper horn is a small plastic alien playing a saxaphone.
WITH THE GREATEST OF EASE
This assemblage is made of found objects and one purchased one (the wings). On the back is an antique rubber alligator climbing up toward the angel (just to add a sense of uncertainty). Again I was going for a folk art / modern art feel.
