Paintings by David Derr
The paintings that David Derr creates are filled with engaging images the continue to fascinate viewers and owners for years. Much of this comes from the layering of imagery, which is done in a style both primitive and contemporary at the same time.
Derr's intensive studies of the art of children as well as primitive cultures shows in the freedom in which his figures are styled, a technique that opens up the imagination of the viewer. There are layers of imagery in his paintings which lends each painting an air on mystery and discovery. One almost never looks at one of his paintings without finding something that was unnoticed before. Derr is a natural colorist, layering, juxtaposing and blending colors to create brilliant jewel-like canvases that keeps the eye glued to the canvas yet continually moving. Derr's artistic heroes include many of those artists that lived and worked in Paris in the 20's, Paul Klee, Marc Chagall, Alexander Calder, Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky, Joan Miro , Picasso, Max Ernst, as well as artists from other eras including Gaugin, Ben Shahn and Robert Rauchenberg. Some of paintings have written descriptions (*), by the artist, explaining the creative process and the content of each painting, They can be found at The Art(ist) section, under paintings. |
