Comments by David Derr on his Digital Works
AAMAN
Not really sure of the meaning of this one. I know is has overtones of the mideast and Islam. The rest of the symbolism I have yet to figure out. Often the painting paint themselves, as if they come from somewhere deep in my sub-conscious. It can take some concentrated effort to figure it all out.
ALLEGORY
A NUTHER WORLD
BALINESE DANCER/DANCE OF THE ANCIENTS
BIG HEAD
BYE BYE
COLLAPSE
_Done shortly after the 911 World Trade Center attacks. It envisions the collective screams of not only the physical victims but of the whole NYC area, and USA.
THE FEMALE HEART
This piece was used for the advertising of the play of the same name by Linda Fiagao Hall and produced by Victor Lirio of DiverseCityTheater in NYC.
CRUCIFIXUS
My take on the passion of the crucifixion. Notice the inverted heart symbolizing the moments of doubt and the almost hidden figure on the upper right which is meant to be the spirit departing his body.
DREAMS OF GAIA
DREAMTIME
My interpretation of the Australian aboriginal concept of Dreamtime which is the belief that we all exist eternally in The Dreaming. This eternal part existed before the life of the individual begins, and continues to exist when the life of the individual ends. Traditional Australian indigenous peoples embrace all phenomena and life as part of a vast and complex system-reticulum of relationships which can be traced directly back to the ancestral Totemic Spirit Beings of The Dreaming.
DRYAD
EVENTIDE
Self-portrait on horse from many years ago.
FALCON
A nesting falcon. The symbolism is both masculine and feminine at the same time. The bird of prey as a nurturer.
FANTASY
My subtitle for this is "And the Fox Jumped over the Buddha." “Fantasy” is a combination of images from vacations, trips and just lying around -- memories of relaxed times filled with flights of fancy.
FERTILE GROUND
The main focus of this piece is imagination and how it is the most fertile of grounds. A good imagination is the stepping stone for greatness. It is the greatest gift we have that could possibly inspire in others. Without it nothing new would ever be created.
FIREBIRD
FIRST CONTACT
ROSE
ON THE FRINGES
Inspired by Susan Vega's song "Left of Center" this piece explores the fringes, of space, time, design and art...or maybe I've lost my mind and am on the fringes of sanity.
FUTURE ARCHEOLOGY
GOOD INTENTIONS
Yes, the road to hell is often paved with good intentions.
GUITAR HEAD
HOLIDAY
KING OF SHADOWS
Insiped by Shakespeare’s “Midsummers Night Dream”
LEDA AND THE SWAN
MADONNA OF THE MACHINE
MAKING ANGELS
MAN IN THE MOON
One of my personal favorite images. I like the buddha face in the moon (see the eye in the upper left of the moon), as well as the abstracted figure framed by the window. The diagonal is like solid moonlight.

NIGHT IN BALI
NIGHT BLOSSOM

POSIEDON'S ADVENTURE
What would Poseidon see were he to take a trip thru his underwater realm?
PREMONITION
PROMETHEUS
In Greek mythology, Prometheus (Ancient Greek: Προμηθεύς, "Forethinker")[1] is a Titan, the son of Iapetus and Themis, and brother to Atlas, Epimetheus and Menoetius. He was a champion of mankind, known for his wily intelligence, who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to mortals.[2] Zeus then punished him for his crime by having him bound to a rock while a great eagle ate his liver every day only to have it grow back to be eaten again the next day.
RECLINING
A study of a reclining figure the rest is up to your imagination.
RON
RUFFIAN
THE SEER
One who can see beyond the present.
THE CROONER
When the crooner sings we are transported to an interior landscape filled with images from our own experiences. Music has the power to transform lives.
ABREAST OF BOTH WORLDS
ARE WE LIKE SHEEP
A combination of images from the chorus in Handel’s Messiah, Munch’s “The Scream”, and the cartoon Beanie and Cecil.
What atrocities have been committed in our world because individuals follow the leaders. In this picture I'm particularly fond of the homage to Munch's The Scream coming out from behind the central sheep figure.
SHIP OF DREAMS
THE BARNYARD
THE BRIDGE
THE SEED
THE CONTENDER
This was inspired by getting my first dog and the house training that ensued.
THE COUPLE
THE SEED
THE GIFT
We give gifts to show affection for someone when we sometimes do not have the words or ability to express those emotions in any other way.
ON THE FIFTH DAY
This digital piece came from learning the music to, and performing, Hayden's "The Creation." It's basically about the creation of the world and all that inhabits it. This image focuses mainly on the creation of the animals with a few extras such as the "monstrous fall" of some of the angels as well as a strange alien creature that just appeared in the act of creation.
TRIBEULATION
In some ways the new digital community both embraces and denies our tribalism. The use of digital technology gives us a sense of community without there really being a physical connection. It allows us to retain a sense of the "rugged individual" while being part of a "digital tribe."
THE TRUMPET SHALL SOUND
This is one of my favorite sections in Handel"s "Messiah," not only because of it dramatic content, but it signals that the end of the work is near. (If you've ever sat through or sung "Messiah" you know what I mean.) This also is a great analogy fo the end of the workday because the lyrics are "The trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised." Been there, done that.
TULIPS
WALK IN THE WOODS
WAR
The alternative title for this is "Leer carrying Ophelia" which is the result of different, but not so different, type of war. The figure carrying the body is tortured and has a deathlike stare, hounded by the hell hound and the angel of death. The body being carried in broken and twisted from the ravages of war.
WATERFALL
WONDERBOY
A FINE SUMMER DAY
AROUND THE CAPE
STILLNESS IN MOTION
This is a photo of my ankles taken with my digital camera, overlayed with an image of a rolled up solar pool cover. The title comes from the concept of a sufi "whirling dervish" who find stillness and enlightenment of the soul in movement .

HORSE DREAMS
Horse Dreams is my homage to Franz Marc and his horse series. The horse is dreaming of freedom, an analogy for the human spirit. The body of the horse is made of composited photos of a nude self-portrait. The texture in the background is from processing a similar photo of the hair on my chest.

INVENTION OP 5 (THE RETURN OF LOP-LOP)
This is the fifth in a series of digital painting incorporating as major components photos from the 2003-2004 Mars Spirit and Opportunity rovers. The title is a homage to Max Ernst famed bird spirit Lop-lop that inhabited many of his paintings.
INVENTION OP 6 (THROUGHT THE LOOKING GLASS)
This is the sixth in a series of digital painting incorporating as major components photos from the 2003-2004 Mars Spirit and Opportunity rovers.
INVENTION OP 7 (SURFACES)
This is the seventh in a series of digital painting incorporating as major components photos from the 2003-2004 Mars Spirit and Opportunity rovers.

This is the eigth in a series of digital painting incorporating as major components photos from the 2003-2004 Mars Spirit and Opportunity rovers.
INVENTION OP 9 (PORTRAIT WITH ELEVATIONS)
This is the ninth in a series of digital painting incorporating as major components photos from the 2003-2004 Mars Spirit and Opportunity rovers.
INVENTION OP 10 (CABO FRIO)
This is the tenth in a series of digital painting incorporating as major components photos from the 2003-2004 Mars Spirit and Opportunity rovers.
INVENTION OP 11 (PASSION)
This is the eleventh in a series of digital painting incorporating as major components photos from the 2003-2004 Mars Spirit and Opportunity rovers.
INVENTION OP 12 (THOUGHT FORM)
This is the twelfth in a series of digital painting incorporating as major components photos from the 2003-2004 Mars Spirit and Opportunity rovers as well as Nano images. The initial concept was to create an image that considered the smallness of Nano objects. While they are small, almost invisible, the concept of seeing a thought, which to this point is invisible was equally fascinating. To be able to use nano images to create a concept of something even smaller was the goal I finally settled on as the image. Overall the final result has the subtle shape of a human profile, seeing thru the skull and seeing the brain forming thoughts, images of half formed animals, eyes and beings can be seen just as thoughts form from nothing.
INVENTION OP 13 (GNOSSIENNE)
This is the thirteenth in a series of digital painting incorporating as major components photos from the 2003-2004 Mars Spirit and Opportunity rovers as well as Nano images. The initial thought behind this was to use Nano images to convey the feel of a piece of music. In this case Erik Satie's "Gnossienne: I. Lent" (as recorded on Buddha-Bar VI, interpreted by Claude Challe). The floating feeling of Satie's music, I thought, lent itself to what could be heard in the world of nano, if we could hear it. This is a purely lyrical work, mostly about dance and rhythm.
INVENTION OP 14 (EBULL12)
This is the fourteenth in a series of digital painting incorporating as major components photos from the 2003-2004 Mars Spirit and Opportunity rovers as well as Nano images.
INVENTION OP 15 (ECHOES)
This is the fifteeth in a series of digital painting incorporating as major components photos from the 2003-2004 Mars Spirit and Opportunity rovers as well as Nano images.
INVENTION OP 16 (EMERGENCE 2)
This is the sixteenth in a series of digital painting incorporating as major components photos from the 2003-2004 Mars Spirit and Opportunity rovers as well as Nano images.
INVENTION OP. 17 (WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE)
INVENTION OP. 18 (THE CITADEL)
INVENTION OP. 19 (IN THE CITADEL)
“In The Citadel” envisions a Nano World inhabited by intelligent nano beings. If life exists or can be created at a nano level I would imagine it looking something like this. This piece was created using the seed image Nano Calibri supplied by NanoArt21 which was composited with a color/textural image I had on file created from other nano images. It was enlarged and cropped and then overlayed with an image of a nano photo of glass to create the “citadel” environment. The nano-beings are images of “nano-particles” which were duplicated, distorted, composited and duplicated to create the beings inhabiting the citadel. Finally I added the lens flare at the top to get the look of an energy source (a beam of electrons) shining through the nano clouds. Exhibited in San Sebastian, Spain at the Passion for Knowledge festival that brings world leading scientists and humanists together from different disciplines and cultures to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Donostia International Physics Center under the commitment for progress of science driven by the love for knowledge.

LIGHT AND SHADOW
Light and Shadows explores not only the most apparent graphical interplay of light and shadotws but also is designed to work on a metaphysical level. We are tied to our circadian rhythms, our bodies and minds are tied into the planets day and night cycles. The importance of the balance of dark and light, joy and sadness, good and evil are important in our everyday lives. While we all wish to live in happiness we often will look for the downside to things, the darkness in the light.
